Stipa

Stipa is a type of grass. It has around 300 species, which are called feather grass, needle grass or spear grass. The Stipeae tribe contains many types of these species that have been moved to new genera in the past.

Many species are used in forage crops and some are used as ornamental plants. One former species is esparto grass (Macrochloa tenacissima).

The Stipa grass properties include the ability to trap and hold water in its blades, which makes it an efficient soil stabilizer.

The grass also has a deep root system that helps to break up compacted soil and improve drainage. Additionally, the long leaves of the Stipa grass help to shade the ground and reduce evaporation.
