How Much Sapphire Turf Should You Order?
Turf is ordered by the square metre.
For a simple rectangular lawn, multiply the length by the width:
Length × Width = Total Square Metres
For example:
8 metres × 5 metres = 40 m²
Atlas Turf recommends adding 5% extra turf to your measured area:
40 m² + 5% = 42 m² to order
Measure each lawn section separately and add the totals together. Irregular areas can usually be divided into smaller rectangles, circles or triangles to make measuring easier.
The additional 5% allows for:
- Cutting around garden beds
- Curved lawn edges
- Paths and stepping stones
- Trees and posts
- Uneven boundaries
- Minor measuring differences
Ordering slightly too much is generally easier to manage than discovering you are short after installation has started.
How Much Extra Turf Should I Order?
Atlas Turf recommends ordering 5% more turf than your measured lawn area.

Turf is perishable. Leaving rolls or slabs stacked for an extended period can cause heat and moisture damage, particularly during warm weather.

- Remove the Existing Lawn and Weeds
Remove old turf, weeds, rocks and building debris from the area. Persistent weeds should be properly treated before new turf is installed.
- Prepare the Soil
Cultivate compacted ground and improve the soil where required. The finished turf underlay should be free-draining, level and suitable for healthy root development.
Poor drainage should be corrected before laying turf. Sapphire Buffalo will not perform well in soil that remains waterlogged.
- Level the Area
Allow for the thickness of the turf so that the finished lawn sits neatly against paths, driveways and garden edging.
Firm the soil lightly, but do not compact it so heavily that roots cannot establish.
- Arrange Delivery When the Site Is Ready
Do not arrange turf delivery while excavation, soil preparation or major construction work is still underway.
The turf should be laid as soon as it arrives.
- Water Immediately After Laying
Water the lawn thoroughly after installation. The water should penetrate through the turf and into the prepared soil below.
Keep the turf and underlying soil consistently moist during establishment without leaving the area permanently saturated.
Caring for New Sapphire Buffalo Turf
The first few weeks are critical to the long-term health of your lawn.
Watering
New turf requires frequent watering while roots establish into the soil below.
Watering frequency will depend on:
- Temperature.
- Wind.
- Rainfall.
- Soil type.
- Drainage.
- Sun and shade.
- The time of year.
Check the turf regularly rather than relying only on a fixed schedule. The turf and soil underneath should remain moist during early establishment, but the area should not stay waterlogged.
