Poaceae Grass
The Poaceae is a large, monocotyledonous family of flowering plants that are found nearly everywhere.
They include the cereal grasses, bamboos, and grasses from natural grasslands and pastures. There are around 780 genera and 12,000 species in this family.
The Poaceae are a family of plants that are important to humans. They provide food in the form of cereal crops like maize, wheat, rice, and barley.
The Poaceae also provide feed for animals that people eat. They also provide materials for things like building houses (bamboo, thatch, and straw) and fuel for cars (ethanol from maize).
Grass plants have thin leaves that are connected together. They grow tall and have hollow stems except at the nodes.
The lower part of each leaf is around the stem, forming a leaf-sheath. They have narrow alternate leaves that grow in two ranks from the base of the blade.
Grass plants are used to being grazed on often because they can grow tall and keep up with it.
Grassland habitats such as savannahs and prairies where grasses are dominant make up 40% of land on Earth, but not including Greenland and Antarctica (total land).
Though they are called “grasses”, seagrasses, rushes and sedges are not in the grass family. They come from different orders.
Rush and sedge belong to Poales, but seagrass is in Alismatales order. All of them belong to the monocot group of plants.
Poaceae Grass Family – Lawn Grasses
A lawn is an area of land covered in grass that is kept short using a lawnmower. People use lawns for recreational purposes and to make their property look nicer.
You can find lawns around houses, apartments, commercial buildings, and offices. In some cities, there are parks with large areas of grass.
In recreational contexts, special names are used for the ground. They are “turf”, “pitch”, “field” or “green.” This depends on which sport you are playing.
The term “lawn” refers to a space with grass that is managed. People have been calling this kind of space a “lawn” since the 16th century.
Lawns are important because they show how people interact with nature and the city. In many suburbs, there are laws that say houses must have lawns and that people must take care of these lawns properly.
In some places where there is a water shortage, local government authorities are encouraging people to use different kinds of plants instead of grass so that less water is used.

Bahia Grass
Paspalum notatum, also known as bahiagrass, common bahia, and Pensacola bahia, is a type of grass that grows in tropical and subtropical climates.
It is well-known for its large V-shaped inflorescence, which is made up of two spike-like racemes that each have many small spikelets.
BentGrass
Paspalum notatum, also known as bahiagrass, common bahia, and Pensacola bahia, is a type of grass that grows in tropical and subtropical climates.
It is well-known for its large V-shaped inflorescence, which is made up of two spike-like racemes that each have many small spikelets.
Bermuda Grass
Cynodon dactylon is a type of grass that can be found all over the world. It is native to Europe, Africa, Australia and much of Asia. This type of grass has been introduced to the Americas. In Bermuda it is known as “crab grass”.
BlueGrass
Poa is a genus of grasses that is found in both the eastern and western hemisphere. They are usually called meadow-grass, bluegrass, tussock or speargrass.
The name Poa was made by the Greeks to mean “fodder”. This genus is part of the subfamily Pooideae of the family Poaceae.
Centepide Grass
Eremochloa ophiuroides, or centipedegrass, is a warm season lawn grass. It is a thick sod forming grass that spreads by stolons, and is medium to light green colored.
It has a coarse texture with short upright seedhead stems that grow to about 3-5 inches. Centipedegrass can be found in the United States, mainly in the southeast states and Hawai’i; it is also considered a weed in some places.
Fescue Grass
Festuca is a type of grass that grows in a lot of places. Festuca can be evergreen or it can also grow as a herb. It is related to the type of grass called Ryegrass.
Recent studies have shown that Festuca does not have monophyly which means all the species are different from each other, even though they might look similar.
RyeGrass
Lolium is a genus of grasses that are part of the bluegrass family. The name ryegrass is sometimes used to refer to other types of grass, but this word usually means Lolium.
Lolium grass grows in bunches. It is native to parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, but it can also be found in other parts of the world. Ryegrass is related to other types of grasses called fescues. People should not confuse ryegrass with rye, which is a type of grain crop.
St Augustine Grass
St. Augustine grass is a type of warm-season grass that is popular for cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions.
It is a medium- to high-maintenance grass that forms a thick, carpetlike sod, crowding out most weeds and other grasses.
Zoysia
Zoysia is a type of grass that is found in many places in Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. People use it for golf courses because it is a good choice for fairways and teeing areas.
The name of the genus, Zoysia, was given after a botanist from Slovenia named Karl von Zois. Zoysia grass is a type of grass that is known for its durability and its resistance to pests and diseases.
Kikuyu
The kikuyu grass, Cenchrus clandestinus, is native to the highland regions of East Africa. It is an aggressive plant that grows really fast and has many common names like kikuyu grass or Pennisetum clandestinum.
The plant is categorized as a noxious weed in some areas but it’s also used in gardens because it’s inexpensive and drought tolerant.
Pasplalum Grass
Paspalum is a type of grass that is found in many different places. It is mostly in Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas.
Paspalum are also called bahiagrasses or crowngrasses. They are tall perennial New World grasses that are most diverse in subtropical and tropical regions.
Ornamental Grasses
Ornamental grasses are a type of plant that is grown for its appearance, rather than for its ability to make food.
Many people like to use ornamental grasses in colder areas, because they can survive cold temperatures and still look good.

Calamagrostis
Reed grass is a genus of plants with about 260 different species. They live mostly in countries that are at a temperate latitude, but some can also be found in places near the equator.
Reed grasses grow from a base and have narrow leaves. The ligule is usually blunt and the panicle forms a circle around the stem. Some may be reed-like.
Cortaderia
The pampas grass has a common name which is applied to all the species in the genus. The name of the genus comes from a Spanish word that means leaves with sharp serrations.
Two of the species, Cortaderia jubata and C. rudiuscula, produce a lot of seed without needing a mate.
Deschampsia
Deschampsia is a type of plant. It can be found in many countries. The name of the plant is after Louis Auguste Deschamps, who discovered it.
The plants are used by some types of insect larvae as food. They sometimes grow in bogs.
Festuca
Festuca is a type of plant that belongs to the grass family. The plants are evergreen or are not green all year round.
They can be 10-200 cm/4-79 inches tall and they can grow anywhere, but not in Antarctica. There is new research about these plants that shows they do not have monophyly.
Melica
Grasses in the genus Melica are perennial plants found in most temperate parts of the world. They have clumping or short-rhizomatous growth habits, and grow up to 250 cm tall.
The flowering culms bear spikelets of papery flowers, with one to seven fertile flowers and a rudimentary structure at the distal end composed of one to four sterile florets.
Muhlenbergia
The genus of plants is named after a guy. Gotthilf Heinrich Ernst Muhlenberg. He was a botanist and he liked plants.
There are many types of this plant, but they mostly live in the southwestern United States and Mexico. People call them muhly because that’s their common name.
Stipa
Stipa is a type of grass. It has around 300 species, which are called feather grass, needle grass or spear grass.
The Stipeae tribe contains many types of these species that have been moved to new genera in the past.
Many species are used in forage crops and some are used as ornamental plants. One former species is esparto grass (Macrochloa tenacissima).
Germination
To get a good stand of Buffalo grass, you’ll need to water it at least twice each day.
The first time is before sunup and again in the evening so that its roots can develop properly during this short period when they’re most susceptible—especially since these plants don’t store much moisture from rainfall like other types do!
After about 15-21 days (or more), depending on cloud cover) your newly planted seed should have germinated enough for us all enjoy our yards come summertime..
