Sir Walter Buffalo Turf

Why choose Sir Walter Buffalo premium turf?

Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo is the best variety of lawn grass available for most home lawns right throughout Australia where the desire is to match the following criteria:

  1. Excellent drought tolerance.
  2. To have the best possible lawn with the least ongoing work and cost.
  3. Permanent in both full sun and shade.
  4. Being prepared to spend the extra to have the best.
  5. You may be surprised to know cheaper grasses have a greater requirement for soil to perform well. Sir Walter has a lesser soil requirement to achieve a top result. By comparing your total cost including soil, Sir Walter is very competitive.
  6. To achieve the highest appearance level with the least water use, its natural dense layer actually reduces water loss through evaporation as does happen particularly with couches and short mown Kikuyu.
  7. Does not require a motorised cylinder mower to achieve a professional appearance, as does certainly couch and to a lesser extent, Kikuyu.
  8. Is capable of self-repairing even from substantial damage.
  9. A buffalo that can be used in areas as cold as Bowral, Goulburn and Canberra or the hot dry areas of Sydney suburbs.
  10. To have the most environmentally friendly of all lawn grasses, its minimum water chemical and fertiliser usage are some of the main factors that contribute to this claim.

The only Australian soft leaf Buffalo grass

As the market demand for soft leaf buffalo has gathered momentum so also has the number of varieties. Some are genuine soft leaf buffaloes, others tend to give the impression that they are really common hard buffaloes that underwent a name change overnight. Sir Walter is the only Australian born and bred soft leaf buffalo lawn.

The PBR number of Sir Walter is 96/226 and each purchaser is also issued with a Certificate of Authenticity so that you can be assured that you will receive the high quality product you are paying for.

How does Sir Walter compare to other grass types?

Compared to other grass types such as Kikuyu or Couch, and other Buffalo grasses, Sir Walter is bulletproof. Novice gardeners can easily maintain it and avid greenkeepers can develop into the best lawn on the block.

  • Excellent drought tolerance, as Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo was born and bred in Australia, under Australian conditions
  • Less invasive into gardens than Kikuyu or Couch
  • Requires less mowing than Kikuyu (approx. 50% in summer)
  • Greener colour in winter as Sir Walter remains active, compared to other buffalos
  • Softer leaf – ideal for children to play on
  • Low thatch growth habit means a lower maintenance lawn
  • Greater fungicide resistance means less spraying is needed

Maintenance

Your Sir Walter Buffalo lawn will stay green in winter in most areas provided it is fertilised well in autumn and not mown too low prior to winter. Where Sir Walter is in a shade position it should be kept longer at all times to allow more leaf growth to compensate for the lack of sunlight, and should be watered less frequently.

In spring your Sir Walter lawn (as with any lawn) should be mown very low (except in shady areas) and fertilised. This removes the thatch that has built up in your lawn and allows new stolon growth. This practice has the same affect as top dressing, but is easier and allows your existing lawn height to be maintained.

I would definitely recommend…

“…The turf was delivered and the delivery gentleman from Atlas even informed us, by eye that we had ordered too little turf, and recommended an amount we needed, and was spot on. The process from ordering, to delivering, to laying was all made easier by Atlas and all of their staff, and I would definitely recommend them to any friends or family.”

You were fantastic…

“Just wanted to send you a quick note to let you know how happy we are with our Lawn, right from the start you were fantastic recommending the best lawn for me since I have always lived in a unit it was all a bit confusing. I have a bit of a smile on my face when I walk out on the weekends and my neighbours are all having to mow every weekend but you were right the lawn you selected for me even in summer only needs a quick cut every 3 to 4 weeks to look awesome! Thanks again.”
